Psychology is one of the fastest-growing A Level subjects, attracting students who are fascinated by human behaviour, memory, mental health, and decision-making. In Al Agabiyya, Al Ain, more students are opting for Cambridge and Edexcel A Level Psychology which supports university courses in medicine, psychology, business, education, law and the social sciences. However, success in Psychology requires far more than simply remembering studies as it requires critical thinking, evaluation, and excellent examination technique.
To answer some of the most frequent asked questions, we spoke with Dr Anil Khare at Amourion Training Institute, who has guided many students towards excellent A Level Psychology results.
Psychology seems to involve a lot of memorisation. Is that true?
Dr Anil Khare: It's only partly true. Students do need to remember key psychological theories, experiments, and researchers, but memorisation alone is never enough. The highest marks are for students who can explain studies, discuss various perspectives, evaluate evidence and use psychological knowledge to tackle new situations. Understanding is always better than memorisation.
How is A Level Psychology different from GCSE or lower secondary Psychology?
Dr Anil Khare: A Level Psychology is much more analytical. Students should analyze research techniques, assess the strengths and weaknesses of studies, interpret data and build a balanced argument. The subject develops scientific reasoning alongside essay-writing skills, making it both academically challenging and intellectually rewarding.
What makes students lose marks in Psychology essays?
Dr Anil Khare: Many students provide detailed descriptions but very limited evaluation. Balanced arguments, supported judgments and critical analysis are rewarded by examination boards. Students must explain the usefulness of a theory, explain the limitations, compare the theory with other possible explanations and form well-supported conclusions. This form of academic writing is important in achieving the best grades.
What is the importance of research methods in A Level Psychology?
Dr Anil Khare: Research methods are absolutely fundamental. It is important for students to have knowledge of experimental design, sampling methods, ethical issues, data collection and statistical interpretation. These ideas are used across the whole syllabus and are often integrated into longer examination questions. A strong understanding of research methods improves performance across every topic.
What is the most effective way to revise Psychology?
Dr Anil Khare: Active revision always produces better results than passive reading. Students need to be answering essay questions regularly, analysing examiner reports, creating comparison tables, practising retrieval techniques, and reviewing mark schemes. We also encourage students to review difficult topics on a regular basis and not just once before an examination.
