Admission to Oxford and Cambridge for Medicine: A Guide for Aspiring Medical Students

The University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge are two of the world's most historic universities. Teaching was taking place at Oxford by 1096, making it the oldest university in the English-speaking world. In 1209, scholars fled from Oxford to establish Cambridge, which has become one of the world's foremost educational and research centres. If you are a student who aspires to study Medicine at either of these universities, it is critical to know the admissions process early on as academic merit is just one aspect of a competitive application.

What grades do you need to get into Medicine at Oxford?

The current requirement at A Level for Oxford is A*AA in Chemistry and at least one of Biology, Physics, Mathematics or Further Mathematics. The standard requirement for IB students is 39 points (Higher Level 766). Chemistry is a compulsory HL subject, together with either Biology, Physics or Mathematics.

Does Cambridge have different requirements?

Cambridge's Medicine course currently has a minimum offer level of AAA at A Level or 41-42 IB points with 776 at Higher Level. Chemistry is required and one or two other science or math subjects are required based on the combination of qualifications and the college's requirements.

Do students have to take the UCAT?

Yes. UCAT is an important part of the Medicine application process at both universities. Medicine applicants must take the UCAT at Oxford, and Cambridge will use UCAT results in addition to academic records and an interview.

For 2027 entry, Oxford states that applicants must register and sit the UCAT during the relevant testing window. Students should therefore plan their preparation well before the UCAS deadline.

When should students apply?

Medicine applications have an earlier UCAS deadline than most undergraduate courses. The closing date for entry to Oxford for 2027 is 6pm UK time on 15 October 2026.

This means that students can no longer wait until their last school term to prepare for university research, applications and admissions tests.

What happens after the initial application?

Shortlisted applicants are invited to interviews. Oxford says that its selection process takes into account academic achievement, admissions tests, references, interviews and other information available.

Cambridge also takes into account academic performance, UCAT results and interviews. It is important to note that Cambridge does not have a minimum UCAT requirement for its selection process for Medicine for 2027; results are considered as part of the overall application.

What qualities are Oxford and Cambridge looking for?

While academic achievement is essential, successful medical applicants must have more than just good grades. Oxford identifies qualities including: empathy, communication, ethical awareness, motivation, teamwork, problem-solving and intellectual curiosity.

Students should therefore develop an understanding of medicine beyond examinations. Should students choose Oxford or Cambridge first?

Not necessarily. Students should first consider which course structure, teaching environment and college system suit them best, alongside their academic profile.

Both universities provide excellent medical education, but there are differences in the courses offered and the admissions procedure. Students should do research on the facts, not just for the sake of reputation or ranking.
