My child is aiming for Medicine or Dentistry in Australia. How critical is their A Level Chemistry grade to that pathway?
Dr Anil Khare: It is fundamental & often decisive. Undergraduate medicine & dentistry programs at Australian universities including Monash, the University of Queensland, University of Adelaide, Flinders & Western Sydney require strong science A Level results alongside performance in the UCAT or GAMSAT, depending on the entry route. For graduate-entry medicine via an undergraduate science degree, A Level Chemistry establishes the academic foundation that influences both the program a student enters & the GPA they carry forward into medical school applications. For direct entry programs at institutions that accept international A Level results, an A or A* in Chemistry is typically a formal requirement rather than a preference. A student who underperforms in A Level Chemistry due to avoidable preparation gaps risks limiting their options before those opportunities are fully available.
Organic Chemistry mechanisms are where my child loses the most marks. Is there a structured way to learn them that actually sticks?
Dr Anil Khare: Yes, we do offer a structured way which is the opposite of memorization. Students who try to memorize organic mechanisms as fixed sequences often find that question that are unfamiliar tend to disturb their understanding, because their recall is pattern-based rather than principle-driven. The approach that endures is mechanistic & these core principles underpin every organic mechanism in the A Level syllabus. Once a student internalizes them, they can reconstruct any mechanism logically rather than relying on memorization. We structure every organic mechanisms session around this framework, moving from principle to application rather than from memorization to repetition. Students who initially struggle with organic chemistry frequently come to regard it as one of their strongest areas.
My child's school in Australia covers the A Level Chemistry content but not the examination technique. What specifically are they missing?
Dr Anil Khare: Four things, consistently. First, command word accuracy: A Level Chemistry examiners use 'state', 'explain', 'describe' & 'deduce' to indicate exactly what level of response is required & students who fail to distinguish between them often give the wrong type of answer regardless of their understanding. Second, the mark-scheme terminology: answers must use precise chemical terminology in the exact form the mark scheme expects & paraphrasing a correct idea in less accurate terms typically gains no credit. Third, calculation presentation: Physical Chemistry calculations must show every step, every unit & intermediate result to secure all method marks. Fourth, practical question conventions: graph plotting, treatment of uncertainty & conclusion-writing in practical papers follow defined conventions that are not always covered thoroughly in school. We address all four systematically from the first session.
Can A Level Chemistry tuition be genuinely effective when conducted entirely online and without a laboratory?
Dr Anil Khare: For the written examination components which account for the vast majority of the final grade, online tuition is entirely effective. The practical papers for both Edexcel & Cambridge are assessed in written form: they evaluate a student's ability to design experiments, identify variables, process data & analyze results through structured responses & not through physical practical work.
