A Level Business Studies is one of the most versatile qualifications on the British curriculum, and for students at international schools across Australia it opens routes into Business Administration, Finance, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Management and Law at universities in Australia and internationally. What surprises most students — and many parents — is how technically demanding the examination is. Examiners do not reward familiarity with business concepts or an ability to describe what companies do. They reward structured, contextualized analytical argument: the ability to take a specific business scenario, apply the relevant frameworks, analyze the likely outcomes and reach a justified evaluative conclusion, all within a tight time limit.
At Dr Anil Khare powered by Amourion, we have provided specialist A Level Business Studies tuition for over two decades. We do not operate a physical center in Australia & all sessions are live, interactive & delivered entirely online via shared digital whiteboards. Students across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide & the Gold Coast receive the same depth of examination expertise as students in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha.
Why A Level Business Studies demands more than classroom teaching alone
Dr Anil Khare: A Level Business Studies rewards a very specific kind of thinking that most students have not been formally trained to produce. The mark scheme allocates its highest marks to responses that progress through four layers which are knowledge, application, analysis & evaluation & answers that remain at knowledge & application will score lower marks regardless of its length or accuracy. The student who describes a marketing strategy earns knowledge marks whereas a student who applies that strategy to the specific business in the question earns application marks. The student who analyses whether the strategy is likely to succeed given the business’s financial position, market context & competitive environment gains analysis marks. A student who then evaluates the circumstances under which the strategy would or would not work & concludes with a justified judgement, earns the top marks.
The case study component intensifies this requirement. Both Edexcel & Cambridge present students with a specific business scenario & expect every answer to be grounded in the details of that context rather than in generic theory. A student who applies textbook frameworks without explicitly linking them to the business in the question loses the application marks that the mark scheme specifically allocates. Learning to read a case study purposefully & integrate its details into a structured analytical argument is a trainable skill & it is the focus of our sessions.

Questions Australian A Level Business studies families ask us
My child finds the financial and quantitative sections of Business Studies challenging. Is that a common problem and can it be fixed?
Dr Anil Khare: Extremely common & entirely fixable. The quantitative components of A Level Business Studies including financial ratio analysis, break-even calculations & investment appraisal methods using ARR, payback period & net present value as well as cash flow forecasting are procedural skills. Once a student understands what each calculation measures, why it matters to business decision-making & how to carry out the calculation step by step, performance on these questions becomes reliable quickly. The additional skill required is interpretation which is the ability to take a calculated result & explaining on what it means for the specific business in the question & also whether the conclusion it suggests is strong or limited given the broader context. We address both calculation accuracy & interpretive analysis, because the marks in quantitative Business Studies questions are given between the two.
A Level Business Studies covers a huge range of topics. How do you decide where to focus in limited session time?
Dr Anil Khare: By identifying where the marks are genuinely being lost rather than where the student thinks they are weakest. In A level Business Studies, the two often differ. Students who feel confident in areas such as Human Resources or Operations frequently underperform on those questions in examinations because their responses remain descriptive rather than analytical. We begin with a diagnostic test based on past paper performance & detailed mark-scheme analysis, which reveals exactly which topics are producing responses at the wrong level & most commonly knowledge without application, or analysis without evaluation. From that picture we design a session plan that targets the highest-mark question types & the topic areas where the student consistently fails to reach the upper bands. This targeted prioritization is far more effective than attempting to cover the full syllabus at equal depth.
My child takes A Level Business Studies but is considering Commerce or Finance at a top Australian university. Does this qualification carry weight?
Dr Anil Khare: Directly & significantly. A Level Business Studies is accepted by all major Australian universities for direct entry & ATAR equivalence. For Commerce & Finance courses at the universities such as Melbourne, UNSW, Queensland, Monash & Sydney, an exceptional A Level Business result is important towards the overall entry score while also demonstrating relevant academic preparation for the chosen field. Admissions specialists at Australian business schools value applicants who have already developed the analytical & evaluative skills required by the degree will demand from the start. A student who enters with a strong A Level Business Studies result holds a clear academic advantage over one with only general subject preparation, as the underlying mode of thinking is already established.
My child is in Year 13 and their mock results are significantly below their target grade. Is there still enough time to make a meaningful improvement?
Dr Anil Khare: Yes — but the approach must be targeted rather than exhaustive. A student performing below their target grade in Year 13 will not benefit from attempting to revisit everything from the beginning. The most effective route to rapid improvement is a triage process which involves identifying the specific question types on each paper where marks are consistently being lost, understanding the exact reason why those marks are being lost, whether it is a missing evaluation step, a failure to use the case study context, or errors in quantitative technique & addressing those weaknesses through timed practice. In A Level Business Studies, meaningful grade improvement in the final term of Year 13 is achievable because the subject rewards technique as much as content & technique can be built quickly with the right focused preparation.
