Dr Anil Khare: Six-mark extended response questions are where A Level Biology grades are most determined & the difficulty is typically structural rather than content-based. Examiners assess these questions using a levels-of-response marking scheme, reaching the top band, requires accurate biological detail, a clear & coherent sequence of ideas & consistently precise terminology. Students who understand the content but produce answers that are partially accurate, loosely organized or expressed in everyday language rather than formal biological terms tend to remain in the middle band, regardless of their knowledge. We focus specifically on six-mark technique — planning responses before writing, identifying the logical biological progression the mark scheme is likely to reward & expressing each stage using the exact terminology expected by examiners. Once this structure is mastered, six-mark questions become one of the most dependable sources of marks on the paper.
Genetics is the topic my child dreads most. What makes it so difficult and how do you approach it?
Dr Anil Khare: Genetics challenges students for two distinct reasons & addressing the wrong one wastes time. The first is conceptual: students who lack a clear understanding of the relationship between alleles, genotype, phenotype & the process of meiosis find that every subsequent topic such as codominance, sex linkage, dihybrid crosses & gene linkage, builds on a shaky foundation & becomes increasingly difficult. The second is procedural: genetics questions require students to interpret information from a genetic cross, identify the inheritance pattern from the data & construct an appropriate Punnett square or probability calculation correctly under time pressure. Students who fail to distinguish between these two types of difficulty tend to focus on the wrong area in their revision. We diagnose which problem is actually present at the beginning & address it directly. Students who initially struggle with genetics leave with it as one of their most dependable topic areas, because once the logic is properly understood, the subject becomes structured & predictable.

Dr Anil Khare: The overlap is substantial & highly beneficial when made explicit. Biological molecules, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids & nucleic acids are examined in both A Level Biology & A Level Chemistry, but from different perspectives. Concepts such as enzyme kinetics, hydrogen bonding, pH & the behavior of functional groups create direct links between the two disciplines. A student who understands the chemistry of peptide bond formation will produce a more accurate & complete Biology answer on protein synthesis & similarly a student who understands enzyme inhibition from a biological perspective will approach equilibrium concepts in physical chemistry more intuitively.
