When you start working with a Coach, you’ll see that it’s not just about training him to help you get your goals – this takes commitment and energy on your part. To be successful, you need to be able to put yourself in the mindset of achieving your goals, and knowing how to approach them and stay focused on them. When we work with our Coach, he will provide you with ways to keep this type of mindset at bay so that goals become more attainable. Our goal is not to keep you from failing, it is to help you succeed by providing the right steps, behaviors and tools so that you can achieve your goals. It’s really not as much about training as it is about making sure that you are setting goals that are appropriate for you. Let’s explore what a Coach can do for you to make goal setting, and goal achievement much easier.
It’s been proven that there is a huge connection between your mental attitude and your ability to be successful at anything. This is why a Coach can be so effective in helping you create new goals, as well as old goals, and chart your progress toward these new and more challenging goals. By the end of a three to four month coaching session, you should be able to set goals that are aligned with your true abilities and interests.
Your new Coach will start out by asking you some questions to get you thinking about what you like to do and where you are strongest in your current field. From this, he’ll determine the kind of goals you should be working on and how to set them. Your Coach will help you use visualization techniques to help you with this process, as well as helping you to brainstorm achievable goals that may have previously been out of reach. You’ll start to think about what is important to you and how best to reach those goals.
Once you’ve decided on the goals or fields that you want your coaching sessions to focus on, you’ll be put in contact with your Coach. The first part of the coaching relationship is establishing trust. As part of this, your Coach will bring you into the ‘zone’ – a calm, detached state where you are most focused on achieving your goals. This state is essential for goal setting, since it will minimize the need to rush and think in terms of actions. Trust is essential, since the results you want will depend on your level of trust.
Once you’re in the ‘zone,’ your Coach will keep you there through the process. During your first Coach consultation, he/she will ask you to think about what it is that you like to do, and where you are strongest in your field. He/she will also ask you about your values, interests, and goals in life. After your initial consultations, you will both have a better understanding of where you are headed. Your Coach will show you how you can align your behaviors, work, and values with your goals and/or objectives.
The next step is making your Coach aware of your plan. If you are writing goals, you’ll have to include a time line (how long you plan to achieve them), and be clear about what it is that you hope to achieve by achieving those goals. Your Coach will help you to define and quantify your goals within your plan.
Finally, you’ll set your goals. You will create milestones for achieving those goals, and communicate to your Coach that you are on track to meeting your goals. You’ll be given a deadline, and you’ll be motivated to continue after you’ve met your initial goals. The most important thing to remember about setting goals is that they must be attainable. If they are unattainable, your efforts will be fruitless.
Again, working with a coach for effective goal setting is not complicated. It is simply part of effective coaching. The most important thing to remember is that your goals are specific, measurable, attainable, and realistic. Without these three things, you cannot effectively set and achieve goals. Good Luck!
